Solubility and palatability

Tiamutin 45% soluble powder is freely soluble in water, independent of pH. High levels of Tiamutin in drinking water will reduce water intake of birds. It is thought this is due to its bitter taste. Studies have shown that it does not significantly depress egg production however, nor does it affect hatchability. In case of high ambient temperatures, decreases of water intake may be disadvantageous.

In such cases aspartame 1 gram per 100g Tiamutin 45% may be used. Alternatively 5g of saccharin or 150g of dextrose may be added to improve palatability.

Reports indicate this reduction in water consumption is age-dependent. Thus, the premix is commonly applied in-feed after start of lay to avoid these problems (see egg production).

For pullets and turkeys, continuous administration during the day through a dose dispenser, or application of 1/3 of the daily dose over 2 hours followed by 3 hours unmedicated water, repeated twice, generally solves the problem as well.
