High lung levels

Some antibiotics concentrate in lung tissue (especially Tiamutin – 40 times blood levels), which appears to offer additional protection, as it may act as a pharmacokinetic reservoir, to maintain Tiamutin concentrations in the extracellular fluid where the mycoplasmas live. It may also be helpful in controlling some bacterial infections, which can damage lung tissue and release the high levels of antibiotic to attack them.

It has been shown that Tiamutin can also concentrate into polymorphs at 5-10 times the surrounding antibiotic concentration. This may play an additional role in combating the mycoplasmas that are engulfed by these immuno-defensive cells.
