Tiamutin Premix has been demonstrated to improve the productivity of pigs infected with
M. hyopneumoniae in artificial infection and field infection studies when used both short term and long term.
Hsu, F.S. and others (1983) [?] reported on the value of Tiamutin premix at 30 ppm thf in improving the performance of pigs artificially infected with M. hyopneumoniae. 64 pigs were artificially infected with M. hyopneumoniae and when symptoms of respiratory disease were established, at 14 days post infection, treatment with Tiamutin premix commenced for 28 consecutive days with 10, 20 and 30 ppm levels of thf. A further group remained as infected, non medicated controls. The test duration of the study was 42 days.

Thus the group medicated with 30 ppm thf showed improvements of 7.4% in average
daily gain and 5.5% in feed conversion efficiency over the 42 day trial compared with the unmedicated controls.
Burch, D.G.S. (1982) [?] reported on three farm trials in UK in which Tiamutin premix at 20 and 30 ppm thf over an 8 week period was used to improve the productivity of pigs affected with enzootic pneumonia (M. hyopneumoniae infection and secondary bacteria). The farms involved had a prevalence rate of pigs with enzootic pneumonia of 81% to 94%. The results of 3 trials showed that Tiamutin® (30 ppm thf) significantly improved the weight gains (+4.3%) and feed conversion efficiency (5.1% imp) in comparison with pigs not receiving Tiamutin.

Anderson and Williams (1988) [?] reported from USA on the effect of Tiamutin premix, at an inclusion level of 38.5 ppm thf (35g thf / US ton), when used continuously from approximately
15 kg to slaughter at around 102 kg body weight on pigs affected with M. hyopneumoniae infection (72 pigs), in comparison with unmedicated infected controls (72 pigs).
The presence of the infection was confirmed by clinical signs gross and microscopic examination of pigs which died and lung lesions observed at slaughter. Swine dysentery was not present in the pigs. The average starting and finishing weights were 14.9 kg and 101.9 kg and the medication period was 126 days. There were statistically significant differences in performance between the Tiamutin premix medicated pigs and the unmedicated control pigs (see below).
